Resources for Planning A Reading Incentive Program

Think about annual events such as:

School-wide or Community Initiatives:
Check with reading teachers, literacy coach, Title I staff, principal, classroom teachers, standing committees—how can you enhance something that is ALREADY happening in your district or building? (e.g., Robbins Library collaborates with Arlington’s Human Rights Commission to sponsor a town-wide multicultural read each fall.)

Web sites, books, periodicals
As you read professional journals, think about how you can adapt lessons or suggestions for reading incentive programs. Some great places to look for ideas include: Library Sparks, School Library Media Activities Monthly, Booklinks, Instructor

Professional books might also spark some good ideas. We’ve gotten great ideas from:

Websites that can be useful include:
Kansas University Diversity Calendar
National Education Association (NEA) educator page:
Reading Matters (sponsored by the Mass. Teachers’ Association—offers good links to their reading incentive program done with Boston Red Sox):
Baltimore County Public School Reading Motivation Page (compiled by the fabulous Della Curtis)
